Pierpont Lifelong Learners Welcomed to Their New Home

WHITE HALL — Pierpont Community & Technical College Lifelong Learners were welcomed to their new home Friday.
Their classes are moving this year from the Merchant Street classroom, which was no longer available to them, to the Advanced Technology Center in White Hall.

On Friday afternoon, they gathered for an open house and facility tour at the center for “Move-in Day.”
It was their first day in the building. The organization was created through Pierpont Community and Technical College to provide individuals over the age of 50 with educational programming and workshops in a number of subjects, according to a previously-published Times West Virginian article.

As the Lifelong Learners gathered in one of the center’s large rooms, officials including Johnny M. Moore, president of Pierpont Community & Technical College, and Michael Paul Waide, interim provost and vice president, spoke to them.

“You’re a part of our academic family and for that, I’m excited and I welcome you,” Waide said.

He told the Lifelong Learners that their dedication to continuing the pursuit of learning “is both something that is laudable and should be praised.” He also said it was an inspiration.

Juanita Edge, the curriculum coordinator for the Lifelong Learners Association, said Move-in Day was going smoothly.

“It’s been wonderful,” she said.

She noted the organization has a total of around 200 members, who take classes of interest to them.

“We’re just people who love to learn,” she said.

“We’ll be coming up here and having our classes up here.”

“We’ll be just spread around in whatever classrooms are available to us on any given day,” she said. “And what we do, we coordinator our schedule with their schedule.”

One of the lifelong learners, Alana Pazdric of Fairmont, was happy about the move.

“This place is lovely,” she said.

She is going to be teaching a class on mahjong and was hoping she would be able to handle the technology needed to teach the class.
