Pierpont Provides New Medical Equipment to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital received a new-state-of-the-art microscope with a digital camera thanks to Pierpont Community & Technical College.

On October 5th, hospital employees and Pierpont faculty members attended a special training provided by the equipment supplier, Leonard Instruments Company, to learn how to use the equipment and save images. Melissa White is the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program Coordinator for Pierpont and last summer she applied, and was awarded, an American Society for Clinical Pathology Foundation Grant.

“We used the grant funds to purchase a microscope with a digital camera and a viewing tablet,” White said. “The equipment can be used with students, but will also provide continuing education opportunities for the lab technicians.”
White added, “They can save images from difficult cases or take a digital image of a slide to use for consulting with an off-site specialist, like a pathologist.”

According to White, the microscope can also be used to complete daily work assignments in hematology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is an educational partner with Pierpont Community & Technical College.
